An adult human has 206 bones whereas at birth they have 270 of them. As children grow in age a lot of the bones they have fuse together thereby reducing the number to 206. Bones help to give the human boody its structure or shape and also help to protect vital organs in the body. For example, the heart and lungs are protected by the sternum and the rib cage. Bones are made up of mainly calcium, phosphorus and sodium and 50% water and in totality they make up about 14% of the total weight of a person. The most complicated skeletal structures are the hands and feet because they make up more than half of all the bones in a person. For instance, one hand contains 27 bones whereas a foot contains 26 bones.
