There are 195 countries in the world out of which 193 are recognized by the United Nations with the exception of Palestine and Holy See which are recognized as observer states. An observer status is given to a state that has a limited capacity to participate in the activities of an organization like for instance in our case, The United Nations. These activities include voting and proposing resolutions. Other quarters recognize that there are 197 countries in the world with the inclusion of Taiwan and Kosovo. The UN recognizes Taiwan as a member of the Republic of China even though it has its own army, government with a president and its own constitution. Kosovo on the other hand declared itself independent from Serbia in 2008 and is a member of several organizations like the IMF.
