Saree is a universal dress and it can be worn as a formal dress but the point to note is, your saree should be decent and simple like (silk sarees) if you are going to wear it to office or any formal event. There are many types of sarees and just by seeing them you will know which can be worn as formal dress or which can't be worn as formal dress. Obviously a heavily embroidered saree goes for weddings and for party wear or for such other events but a plain silk saree is a casual wear you can wear it for a party, wedding or office as long as you find yourself comfortable but a embroidered saree cannot be worn as formal dress. So, when you are choosing a saree for formal wear you should look for decent colours, plain and not too shiny sarees.
