Earthquakes are violent or mild shakes of the earth that are caused when seismic waves are produced from the earth's core. These seismic waves are produced either by natural occurance or artificial means through explosives. These forms of energy are produced from the core of the earth through eruptions in the core of the earth and are transmitted by the rocks. These bursts of energy causes tectonic plates along fault lines to shake uncontrollably thereby creating earthquakes. Areas around fault lines are more prone to earthquakes. Earthquakes are measured by seismometers and can have different magnitudes which can be accompanied with devastating effects.
