A tsunami is a surge of very high waves upto 100 feet and even more that come from the ocean and move towards the shores. They usually come with very devastating effects as a result of the force they come with and also the height of the waves. Tsunamis are produced when earthquakes occur in the ocean floor. The earthquakes occuring on the ocean floor are many times caused by shift in the tectonic plates on the sea bed that shake the surface of the ocean thereby causing a distrubance on the ocean floor that creates very high waves which have devastating effects once they hit the shores. Most tsunamis occur in the Pacific ocean around an area referred to as the 'ring of fire' because of the active volcanic activity that causes shifts in the tectonic plates that results to common earthquakes.
