It is possible to convert solar energy directly into electrical energy by means of silicon wafer photovoltaic cells, also called the solar cells, without any intermediate thermodynamic cycle. The solar cells operate on the principle of photovoltaic effect, which is a process of generating an emf as a result of the absorption of ionizing radiation. Thus a solar cell is transducer, which converts the sun’s radiant energy directly into electrical energy and is basically a semiconductor diode capable of developing a voltage of 0.5-1 volt and a current density of 20-40 ma/cm^2 depending on the materials used and the conditions of sunlight.
