Antarctica is the largest desert in the world covering an area of approximately 5.4 million square miles. It is also the 5th largest continent in the world. Ninety eight percent of its surface is covered by 6,200 feet of ice. Temperatures in this region range between -80-89 degrees celcius during the winter and 5-15 degrees during the winter, no wonder it is the coldest place on earth. With these extreme temperatures it is interesting to note that there are still inhabitants in this region, most of whom are reseachers. There numbers range from 1000 researchers during the winter anf 5000 during the summer.
