Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, zoster or zona, is a viral infection that manifests itself as a painful rash. It can affect any part of the body but it generally appears as a blister that forms a strip around either the left or the right part of the torso, around one eye or even on one side of the neck or face. The incidence of shingles across the globe varies between 1.2 and 3.4 cases for every 1000 medically sound individuals, with the rate getting higher among those aged above 65.
