After walking for 25 years trough ups and downs of the roads on the same way of humanity, now we realize that none of us had ever bothered to keep a written record of this journey. We were few when we started. Now we are many. But we never felt someday we too have to tell our story, as a common man never tells how he arrived today. Sramajibi Hospital is the today’s common name to initial Belur Sramajibi Swasthya Prakalpa Samity, a small effort on humanitarian cause. Once upon a time, there was a steel factory, Indo-Japan Steels Limited (IJSL) in Belur, Howrah, West Bengal, India. We, workers of this factory understood that there can many things be done after 8 hours duty than just spending the left 16 hours in leisure. Thinking this, we and our family involved ourselves in co-operative provision store, cultural activities, co-operative business (please visit 'Activities' page) and yes, health awareness. Coming to health awareness at the very beginning, we tried some very unique formulae towards health. For an example, addiction to alcohol and beating the wife as an aftermath was very common to the workers. We started boycotting the identified person totally. This did the magic cure to the addicts. Coming to health awareness at the very beginning, we tried some very unique formulae towards health. For an example, addiction to alcohol and beating the wife as an aftermath was very common to the workers. We started boycotting the identified person totally. This did the magic cure to the addicts. During our initial phase in 1970s we eventually met a group of young doctors who were claiming from the government to have the right of treating patients properly and not in a way that always government makes for them. Unfortunately for this basic claim they had to start a movement, called Junior Doctors’ Movement, and even commit fasting in public. In such a scenario, IJSL people and those doctors came together and found a common cause to move on and since then workers, the pushed back class of society, and doctors, the so-called fortunate class, became all Sramajibi. Khamarpara was the ideal nearby place in Belur for any welfare. It is a workers’ colony, as good as slum. Small houses clinging each other, scarcity of sanitary system, no matter of education—all together a perfect workers’ area. We realized at the very beginning most of the diseases in the area are due to unhygienic living style and can be prevented before actually it occurs. Thus we started area cleaning operation. Every Tuesday we used to go there and clean the roads and drains. Mothers used to make their children done with the morning matters before ‘they’ come for cleaning. Eventually we saw surge of volunteers from the area, mainly youths and house wives and became our group. Then we felt the need of a health centre. The head master of the local Hindi Jagriti School then permitted us to use the corridor, a table, a chair and a bench of the school in evening. 2nd October, 1983, we started our very own Belur Sramajibi Swasthya Prakalpa Samity on the school corridor. School given bench was not for waiting people, it was the bed for check up, dressing and all other possible-impossible matters. A bulb could be arranged pulling wire from the adjacent Mr. Ramchandra Sharma’s house. Everyday, someone or the other of the locals would provide us chapattis, puffed rice or something as our food.
